Papa John's now has some garlic rolls thing advertised on the TV. They only serve to remind me of the garlic buns Free Wheeler has been doing since before 1980 when I first found them. Think about it. An independent pizza restaurant that's been in business, at various locations, since before 1980. How much more of a review could you possibly ask for?

Amazing Calzone. The Ziggy is just right! Food tastes GREAT! I don't like to eat late, but was jonesing. So I have tried Big Daddy's (Ok), The Pie(South Jordan is better, too much cheese downtown), and Papa's... Wanted something good and this came up in GrubHub. Ordered a calzone with peppers, spinach, pepperoni, and Sausage. Was very tasty, but messy. Loved the crust though. I also ordered the Ziggy Bread. AMAZING. Lots of cheese, but not so much that you cant taste the flavor of the bread. I ordered a club as well for lunch, but that might be lunch for the rest of the week! That is a BIG sandwich. The dipping sauces ware awesome as well. Great spot downtown.

I ordered Free Wheeler while I stayed at a hotel downtown. It was.... good? I mean, it was definitely pizza. But the pizza didn't make me see new universes or invent new colors. It also didn't even make me say "damn... wow.... holy cow..." in any way or combination. It was just pizza. My biggest pizza pet peeve happened as I ate it. The number one crime against pizza. All the cheese and toppings slid off with THE FIRST BITE. It makes me so angry just thinking about it. Chill out with the damn sauce. I don't need to eat a lake of tomatoes that makes the REAL star of pizza FALL OFF WITH ONE TUG OF TEETH. HOWEVER. Their Ziggy sticks were the business and they should probably only sell those. They were cheese sticks, covered in cheese and FILLED with cheese. I liked these for their lack of annoying sauce and their abundance of cheese. Also their ranch dressing was delicious with it. No idea if it's house-made or if they got it somewhere but it's amazing. So yeah, it's pizza. It's swimming in sauce. Their cheese sticks are great. But I'm sure you could go elsewhere and find better pizza and probably better cheese sticks.

Best pizza I've had in SLC. I had the Aloha (Hawaiian) pizza, and it tasted great the night I got it and tasted great out of my refrigerator the next day. I really liked the crust; I think they put oil on it. If you're really trying to load up on carbs, the garlic knots are a must. I ordered online and my driver delivered before the estimated arrival, which is a plus in my book.

4 slices of mediocre pizza and 2 cans of soda for $26?! And it took 27 minutes to get our slices. I'd stay away from here.... There isn't a slice of pizza in the world worth $6 a slice. In fact, in San Diego we get two slices and a soda for $6.

There are lots of pizza joints to choose from, but Free Wheeler is hands down the BEST. You may need to wait about an hour for delivery, but the food is worth the wait. Their famous garlic rolls and ziggie stix are amazing, and their pizza is made with a sourdough crust that is out of this world. Life is too short for crappy pizza--order some Free Wheeler and support a local business at the same time!

After an awkward encounter with one of my regular pizza delivery men from another pizza place, I had to find a new place to order pizza from. I ordered the white pizza and an order of garlic knots and everything was pretty yummy. I'll definitely be ordering from here in the future.

Not a bad pizza. We got the BBQ Chicken pizza and the pesto special (modified). BBQ chicken pizza was great, and the pesto special was alright. Instead of getting cooked tomatoes, we subbed in sun dried tomatoes. But the sun dried tomatoes weren't great. So I regret that decision. Other than that, no frills pizza. I was told the sandwiches were out of this world. So I'll try those next time!

Fast delivery! Wonderful food. They have specials on their Facebook each month. Yay for saving $$$. The drivers are very quick, safe, and conversational! I will definitely be reordering. I love their hours as well, especially for downtown slc.

Great, fresh pizza! Their storefront is a little shoddy, so I would recommend pickup or delivery, but otherwise, the pizza was great, and that's what matters, right? We got the Big Wheel pizza, which had a bunch of fresh veggies on it including tomatoes.

Good pizza, ok service.. not cheap though! I'd go back.

Living Social offered a coupon and was very pleased I bought it. . Their ziggy strips are so good. There was just the right amount of garlic without being overwhelming. The salads were fresh with a lot of toppings. Their homemade ranch dressing was fresh and extremely thick. It makes a great dipping sauce for the ziggy strips. The pizza was tasty with a thick marinara that closely resembled tomato paste. The crusty was excellent and the toppings were plentiful. It's the best pizza I've had in the Salt Lake area in a long time. There are only a few tables in the front of the restaurant but they seem to do a booming delivery business. If only they would deliver a little farther north. They have a good delivery area and are open until 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays.

So here I am in Salt Lake City for the first time. Coming from San Diego and being raised in Brooklyn, I had high standards on what Utah pizza should taste like. Everyone in the office told me Utah is the land of chain restaurants, where Bennigans and Applebees dot the landscape and local places are in short supply. They were wrong. Utah, and SLC in particlular, is not bad. That should be the state motto. "Utah - its not bad". The people were polite and courteous, and surprisingly there are funky and unique places to eat. Free Wheeler is an absolute gem. Yes, the place is not a palace. It doesnt have to be. Its easy to get to, about ten minutes from the Energysolutions Arena where the Jazz play. Its neat and comfortable, and the menu is extensive. They do pizza. All kinds of toppings in all kinds of combinations. My buddy and I had a half Super BarbQ CHicken and half veggie works...We found it soley based on the previous Yelp reviews, and being out-of-towners we expected them to live up to the ratings. They did and then some.! Out comes this steaming, cheesy masterpiece with a crust that Bacchus himself would envy. This was nothing a chain restaurant could create, this was art on a plate. Eight fully loaded, chewy crusty, pieces with toppings that exploded in your mouth. You ever want to eat something slow, just because its that good, but you end up eating it quickly because its so good? Thats Free Wheeler! Another test that they passed: "Does the pizza travel well?" How will it taste tommorrow? Well, two slices managed to spend 2 days in our hotel mini fridges and 55 seconds in the microwave quickly restored their former glory. This tourist proclaims Free Wheeler the best pizza in the SLC. And for comparison purposes, I ate at Bostons in Layton.. p.s. The owners ask us during our meal "if everything was okay?" . We both yelled a resounding "NO!". Its not alright, its SUPERB!" go. eat. enjoy.

Great delivery service. Great pizza, crust is chewy and pizza is cheesy. I love the alfredo sauce with half chicken and half gyro meat, delicious!!! Yes, I said it, gyro meat! It's like a cheesy gyro. I love the pizza here!

mmm...mmm...mmm! So good. I was jonesin' for some pizza the other day, and while paroozing Yelp, I found Free Wheeler Pizza. I ordered online, and since I was going to be out running errands, I decided just to go pick it up. Even better, I was a few minutes early and my pizza was hot and ready to be given to my greedy hands and eyes. To my mouth's delight, the pie was pretty damn tasty, if I do say so myself. I got the Greek pizza with gyro and it definitely filled my craving. The sauce wasn't too heavy, nor the crust too thick, and the toppings were just right. The only thing I would think of changing is having either thicker cut gyro or more of it on the pizza, but other than that, I have to give it two thumbs-up! Thanks, Free Wheeler Pizza, for filling my tummy to a happy level!

I have had a craving for Pizza lasting a few months now and this week I finally satisfied it during our visit to SLC, here at Free Wheeler Pizza. The wife found this place on Yelp and decided the good reviews were good enough reason to visit. The food, fantastic. We ordered a half cheese/half "Hawaiian" style pizza and ziggy sticks. The food was not delivered quickly, but when it did arrive it had all of the right flavors, it was oven warm. The marinara sauce for the sticks was great! Now... let us talk about eating in. If you are bringing someone here to impress them, this will probably not be a good place. It is a very basic dine-in experience; you pretty much take care of your own table and bus when done. Does this bother me? Not really, if you have good food and you are focused on that ... I can set my own table. I am bummed we are leaving SLC on Monday; otherwise this would be on my list of haunts to frequent.

This was amazing pizza. We had pepperoni pineapple and the mozzarella breadsticks! OMG so good. Really great late night pizza meal! Plus the service was great and our delivery guy was very nice and cheery :) they also gave us blue cheese instead of ranch I don't know if that was a mistake or if that's normal for the shop but we really loved it! Never would have tried it otherwise :) thanks free wheeler we will definitely be back!

  • Tracee W.

Great pizza! Love the sourdough! The garlic knots shouldn't be taken internally, but the garlic cheese bread is great! There is only one thing that's a problem: the employee's smell like smoke. It's not uncommon to see them smoking in front of the place, and then come in and handle food. Smoking is optional, breathing isn't. Don't get that crap on my food.

We used to live downtown and loved eating here. We moved to Sugar house and they didn't deliver this far. We found out a year ago that they changed their delivery route so we ordered again. The pizza isn't as good as it used to be but out of loyalty and nostalgia we still ordered pizza there. Now they have changed their delivery area to 1 mile away from our house. Every time we call for deliver the person on the other side seems annoyed that we would ask them to deliver that far. We offered to pay more for delivery to support this local business but they still give us a hard time. We try to support local, small businesses but the customer service we have received here will keep us from giving them anymore of our money. I don't understand the mentality but it is their loss and probably explains why the quality of the pizza and garlic rolls have been lacking the last few years.

Out of town at a conference and used GrubHub to find this establishment. They were 20 minutes early, + #1, the order was correct, + #2, the pizza was hot, + #3, and the delivery gentleman was just that a gentleman, + #4. Nice job Free Wheeler Pizza!!!! Thank you!

This place has great pizza, But still doesn't beat Da Bonies pizza in Escalon, Ca. The sausage supreme was pretty good!

My wife and I both became sick for hours after eating a Freewheeler pizza. When I called to complain, they told me the pizza was "pretty standard" and couldn't get off the phone quickly enough. I was up the rest of the night writhing in pain. Not really impressed with their customer care.

This is my first ever yelp review, I've never felt compelled to write one before, but I ordered a large bbq chicken pizza today and was pissed when I opened the box. The cheese was completely off half of the pizza, most of what cheese remained fell off the crust as I ate it. The crust and dough was noticeably undercooked and chewy, the flavor was average at best even if the pizza had been cooked correctly I would still probably only give two or three stars. I spent $25 on the worst pizza I've had in a long time, believe me when I say that I will not be ordering from Free Wheeler Pizza again. I'm posting an image of the pizza, check it out and ask yourself if that's what you want coming to your door.

The saddest part about our recent move out of downtown SLC (other than the actual moving . . . and the no longer being able to drunk-walk to Bayleaf for chicken and waffles . . . and the reality of the food wasteland to which we have relocated -*sigh*) is moving out of Free Wheeler's delivery area. No lie. I relocated here a few years ago from Brooklyn. Brooklyn pizza is no joke. It spoils you, and not just a little bit; more like full-on Princess-and-the-Pea level spoilage. I searched and I searched for good pizza when I got here, and finally decided Este and Maxwell's were the best I could hope for. But then I found Free Wheeler through, of all things, a Living Social voucher. (Take that, Groupon!) I'll admit to some confusion when I first entered the place--it's really just an open kitchen with a few old unmatched tables and rickety old chairs, with get-your-own cutlery/napkins/boxes off to the side of the room. (Delivery, not dine-in, is obviously their forte.) But the smells were overwhelmingly delicious and, again, I had a voucher and God forbid I waste it. When the "ziggie stix" arrived, piping hot and within ~7 minutes of our arrival/order, we were in heaven. This is not your ordinary cheesy garlic bread. Instead, it's perfectly olive-oiled carbo deliciousness stuffed with mozzarella and topped with more mozzarella, tons of fresh garlic, and parmesan, served with both a side of rich tomato sauce and a side of homemade ranch dressing. Completely addictive. I could eat two orders of these on my own, in one sitting, and probably would have that night if the pizza hadn't arrived ~7 minutes later and proven itself equally worthy. Delicious sausage, perfect red onions, and fresh mushrooms (on half), with just the right amount of tang to the tomato sauce and chewiness to the crust. So. Good. Over the next several months we tried several more pizzas in various combinations, and loved all of them. (Note: We've never managed to order anything actually listed on the menu because my partner and I like pretty much nothing in common when it comes to pizza, e.g., I don't like chicken so their seven(!) chicken pizza options are out, but JJ doesn't like mushrooms/peppers/olives/fresh tomatoes. But several of the listed items, e.g., Super Vegi, Big Wheel, do look pretty fantastic, and the Alfredo Carbonara pizza would definitely be something I'd go for if I were trying to kill myself with happiness. And fat. Mmmmm. Fat.) Seriously. Try Free Wheeler. Your tummy will thank you.

This was some excellent pizza. I liked how you could buy just a slice and it was more like two or three (depending on your usual serving size). My favorite part was how tasty the dough was. My friends and I ordered some cheese bread to start and when they brought out our slices we were definitely impressed. We all enjoyed our pizza as well. One friend is a plain Jane and ordered the pepperoni pizza, another ordered one of the multiple meat, she's from Wisconsin and knows a good pizza and this is one of the better places she's found in Salt Lake City. I ordered the ultimate bbq chicken and it was tasty. I'm picky about my bbq sauce and this was just right not to sweet. I enjoyed the added texture of the almonds too. Next time I'm going to try a pizza with pine nuts. Oh and like others have said, sure this place looks divey its in a building next to a laundry mat and has been around for quite sometime but the place is clean and the food excellent so it makes up for it.

I ordered for delivery for a business get together downtown. It took about 45 minutes which they said it would take. The delivery guy was extremely rude due to the fact he had to call since we were in a locked building and he had forgotten his phone and had to go back to get it. When he arrived for the second time he had forgotten the plates, salad, and utensils we ordered. He had to come back a 3rd time. Pizza was just ok. Tasted like Costco pizza, too sweet of sauce and too much sauce. The hot wings and salad were good. The delivery guy probably had an off day, but that aside, not my favorite pizza in town.

    (3)
  • Dan V.

The pizza here isn't bad and the staff is great, but this place has some serious issues. First of all, it's overpriced. $4 for a slice of pepperoni is absurd, especially considering pie hole and este are both within walking distance of this place and offer superior pizza for less. I suggest the owner figure it out before their competitors put them out of business.

    (2)
  • Matt H.

A slice of nice. Crust was crispy and pizza was made fast and fresh. The staff was very friendly and made sure I enjoyed my stay.

Me and my wife are in town for the AYSO soccer Expo the order to set an excellent expectation the delivery driver was on time the pizza was fresh and hot and delicious best pizza ever eaten thank you very much highly recommend ordering from this place

Amazing pizza from crust to toppings! We moved to the area a month ago and have already found a reason to order Free Wheeler Pizza 3 times! I don't like marinara and have always put almonds on my pizza so their pesto pizza is pretty much heaven on earth for me! Their staff is friendly and delivery is FREE!!! I'll be really sad when we move outside of their delivery area.

Very good pizza. They make sure to add lots of flavor to each menu item :) Keep up the great work!

  • Lauren S.

The food was pretty good. Had the ziggie sticks and a dinner salad. The ziggie sticks were alright - pretty good. They're very doughy so if you're into that, it's good. I wouldn't describe them as gooey. They have a bit of cheese. The ranch sauce is good. I've had The Pie's cheese pull apart bread and ranch sauce which is orgasmic. Yes, orgasmic. So I'm pretty spoiled about cheese breads. Definitely not better than the Pie's but not horrible. I'd have them again if for some reason I was held hostage and could only order from here.

  • Mark G.

Ziggie Stix were amazing. Ranch dipping sauce was perfect. Pizza was just OK nothing special.

    (3)
  • Michael C.

Fast delivery and tasty pizza with a nice crust, not too thin or thick. We just has ham and pineapple and the cashier made sure we didn't over-pay. I had ordered the Hawaiin without bacon and figured out the two-topping option was cheaper; who doesn't appreciate that?

    (4)
  • Frank M.

With Este around the block I'm not sure why you'd come here. Unless you're ordering delivery I guess. It's not a bad place, just not the best. That's all. You're most likely not dining in. It's not a very dine in friendly experience. The pizza is decent. That's about it. I've purchased cocaine behind this place a few times also. That guy gets 4 and a half stars.

    (3)
  • Stacey M.

The margarita pizza is the best I've ever had! Even in comparison to the Za I've tried in New York and Chicago, this is the best. The garlic knots are also out of this world! Ambience at the restaurant is 'dive' but delivery is speedy.

    (5)
  • Nate W.

Fast Delivery. Pizza was way better than any of the normal chains.

    (4)
  • Nicole L.

Visiting from CA and wanted pizza... Best idea ever!! They delivered to our hotel with free delivery and the pizza and ziggy sticks are delicious and hot (possibly best pizza I've eaten in my life). Very happy! Unfortunately our order did not come with plates and napkins otherwise this would be a five star review- easily... and the Italian sausage was the best part of the pizza :)

    (4)
  • Todd C.

We just moved into a new building on the same street and decided to give their pizza a try. We had the pesto with chicken and pine nuts added on. I am very picky when it comes to my pizza being a native New Yorker and I was pleasantly surprised, the pizza was very tasty and I loved the thin crust. I will definitely be ordering from here again.

    (5)
  • Joanne T.

I thought the pizza was subpar in general. The plain pizza was way too thick and doughy, and the outer crust was 30% of the pizza. There was way too much cheese layered on as well. The ziggy sticks were just OK and I don't understand the hype for it. I had high hopes because of the reviews but will never go back.

  • Kish M.

This place is a dive, and I say that in the, "wow what a great dive" and not the "man what a dive, let's get out of here" way. If you are going for the ambiance this is not the place for you, if you are in search of good food then Free Wheeler Pizza is a diamond in the rough!! While in search of a new pizza place I stumbled across Free Wheeler and let me just say that the Garlic Cheese Bread, the Ziggy Stix (more on those in a minute) and the Pizza's are as good as you will find anywhere in Salt Lake ................... no disrespect to the Pie but the food here is every bit as good as the Pie if not better. The Garlic Cheese Bread has a great garlic flavor and they do not cheat you on the cheese, the pizza is made from fresh ingredients and taste like homemade perfection, and the Ziggy Stix's are a treat, think pizza, garlic bread, mozzarella sticks all rolled into one just better .............. yep, the Ziggy Stix's are great. Locally owned, nice people, good food, what's not to like. If you are in search of a new pizza shop then I would recommend Free Wheeler. Until next time Yelper's ................ Be Local, Live Local, Buy Local!!!!!

I was working at my old job last summer when a customer from Utah told me if I ever traveled to Salt Lake to eat here. It just happened to be a couple months later when my mom and I flew in to Salt Lake City that I told her we needed to come here for lunch. It took us an hour to find it because, being from the West Coast where we have ACTUAL street names, it was very confusing which street was south or west. Anyway, when we finally found it, it was empty and we sat down and ordered the pizza that had been suggested to me by my costumer, the Chicken Alfredo pizza. It was AMAZING! Honestly better than any pizza I've tasted, which is a lot. If I was ever in Salt Lake again, I would definitely go back. I highly recommend this place as the service was good and the pizza was just wonderful.

  • Britni A.

These guys were amazing! We were driving from Wyoming to Springville and really needed something that was fast but not fast food. We searched for pizza in Salt Lake and found this gem! Not only did they have our pizza done EXACTLY when we needed it (road trip remember) but the service picking up our order was fast, friendly and affordable. They got a big tip! We got the Pineapple, Ham & Bacon Pizza (can't remember the name) I'll admit I was skeptical that something like this could be made as delicious as "back home" but after one pie I now wish they delivered all the way to our home in Santa Barbara.... This was the best pizza I have ever had! YUMMMMMMMMMM! Free Wheeler pizza is #1!

We ordered delivery on a Saturday afternoon, looking for something different. I was feeding 3 pre-teen boys, 1 pregnant woman and myself. We had 3 pizzas and only 5 pieces were eaten, I have a lot left over which I'm sure I will toss in a couple of days. I ordered the vegi pizza and it was ok, nothing great. My BBQ chicken pizza lover had one piece of his and passed on the rest (he usually eats at least half of a small pizza) the cheese lovers each ate one piece and shrugged. The chefs salad was delicious. The dog stole half the ziggy sticks. It wasn't terrible but we won't order it again.

  • William D.

YUM! I'm staying at the Homewood Suites, just out of the delivery zone of the pizza joint I remember from College. (really, won't go 1 extra block?) Anyway, lucky me! I got the *Big Wheel* combo pizza, and it is delicious. Garlic rolls are good too, make sure you order them with *light* oil. Still, they're drippy, either get a bib or take off your shirt before digging in.

  • Chris S.

Ordered a pizza for delivery last night. We got the buffalo chicken pizza. It was really good! Loved the blue cheese sauce that they put on it. We also got an order of garlic balls while they were very good. They were drenched in olive oil. So much olive oil that when you bit into them it filled you mouth with oil. I thought it was a little expensive for what we got but it was good

  • Holly J.

Love the pizza slices, ziggy strips and try the garlic rolls! My favorite pizza is pepperoni and green olive! YUM! Try the white sauce pizzas too as they are delicious. Thanks to all who work there in the heat just so we can have delicious food!

  • Tyler J.

Local hot spot offers great pizza, garlic balls will be sure to satisfy the garlic lover in all of us. Am I right? We got half cheese half buffalo, the combination of the two was a welcomed change from the normal day to day of pizza practices. Be sure to grab a buddy to join on your trip to the bathroom, otherwise you might be enjoying the pizza to its fullest.

As a kid it was probably frozen and I didn't care. In college, I thought The Pie was the bomb. Now as an adult I actually know what pizza is supposed to taste like ;) I can think of only a couple places in SLC that make a good pie and Free Wheeler is certainly toward the top of the list. With creative recipes that actually work and taste amazing plus a down to earth staff that seem to genuinely care about the food they make. If you're after a great classic or a unique gourmet pizza at a fair price be sure to check these guys out. Their shops a bit goofy (like all good pizza joints) but easy to get to for pickup and you simply can't get a better pie delivered to your door. I loved 'em and definitely recommend them to others.

  • A L.

The crust tasted like I was eating cardboard. I got the thin crust, so maybe the regular crust is better. I don't think I will waste my money to find out though.

I travel to Salt Lake twice a month for work. I decided I wanted to order a pizza instead of going out, and I normally would order from Pie Hole pizza. But I decided to try Free Wheeler. I ordered sausage combo and a salad delivered to my room. The pizza was not good at all. The crust and sauce was horrible. Unfortunately, I could not taste the salad because the driver did not bring any utensils or napkins. I called to see if would be possible to have the driver bring , and the manager refused to have the driver deliver for me. I work with training in customer service, and this was really a horrible customer experience from the manager of this establishment. If the customer service were better, I would have given this place another try.

I called up and ordered the SUPER BARBECUE CHICKEN to go. When I arrived the quoted 15 minutes later, the place was deserted - save the single pizza chef - and the pizza was going to be "another five minutes". They had some cream sodas that looked delicious, so I grabbed one of those for the wait. In the end, it was actually another ten minutes (I am not sure why it took so long with no other customers...) but the pizza was absolutely delicious. Definitely worth it.

  • Daniel D.

It took a while, and lots of mediocre pizzas before we found the best pizza in the Salt Lake Valley. Free Wheeler has mastered the dough-to-sauce-to-topping ratio, and every bite is bursts with tangy tomato, delicious (not greasy) crust, and fresh ingredients. Their specialty pizzas are also incredible. Our favorite: the buffalo chicken. Mmm! Oh, and the free delivery can't be beat!

  • Brittany R.

OMG! What a superb find! We arrived at 530pm, and were the only dining in customers. The only thing keeping this from being a 5 star experience is it was HOT in there. If you are able, it may be more comfortable to carry out or have your pizza delivered. On to the food! My husband ordered the Ziggy Stix, a small Big Wheeler pizza, and a small cheese pizza. The drinks are offered as either single cans of soda or two liters. The Ziggy Stix were delivered first, and they were doughy cheesy goodness. They offered marinara and ranch dipping sauce and were served hot and gooey! Big hit with my 5 yr old. We finished our Ziggies and then the pizza was delivered to the table. The Big Wheeler was a mix of meat and veggies. The cheese was baked to perfection and the crust was crispy and sturdy under the mountain of toppings. Even the cheese pizza was tasty. The staff was extremely friendly and attentive but not smothering. They were sending out what seemed to be a large amount of orders. Reasonable prices for excellent food!
